Developing Case Conceptualizations

Case conceptualization is when supervision officers use assessments and other relevant information to guide the development of supervision strategies, goals, approaches, interventions, and techniques. Conceptualization includes the targeting, ranking, and sequencing of criminogenic risk factors, determining whether persons on supervision would be best served by direct service or referral to external agencies, identifying appropriate service providers, and choosing the frequency and nature of contact with persons on supervision.

Case conceptualization is a dynamic process that needs to be updated regularly as supervision proceeds, considering individuals’ behavior, progress, strengths, and current needs. It places persons on supervision at the center and allows staff to be fluid in their approaches while staying focused on best practices.
