Engaging Persons on Supervision

The foundation of engagement is role clarification. Community supervision staff must first explain the purpose of community supervision so persons on supervision understand the process. Second, staff must explain their dual roles as change agents and enforcement/accountability agents and the conflict inherent in those dual roles. Third, staff must explain the expected role persons on supervision are to play in the supervision process. Persons on supervision are expected to follow conditions and laws and engage in supervision as active partners. They must understand the requirements of compliance and the consequences of non-compliance.
