Engaging External Resources

Supervision officers need to engage natural and community supports. This engagement requires knowledge of communities and their resources, expertise in motivating sources of support, and the ability to balance the needs and interests of persons on supervision with those of the individuals and organizations providing assistance.

Natural supports for persons on supervision include family, employers and co-workers, members of faith communities, prosocial peers, mentors, and 12-Step program sponsors. Community organizations can also be valuable resources in addressing needs and problems beyond staff knowledge, skills, and resources. These organizations include housing agencies, treatment providers, 12-Step programs (e.g., AA, NA), workforce development/employment agencies, education and training providers, prosocial leisure activities, and faith-based groups.
